MMA
Mixed Martial Arts is a “full contact” and “full combat” sport that employs a variety of fighting techniques and skills to be used in competitions. These are a mixture of martial arts and non-martial arts traditions.
Todays’ Modern Mixed Martial arts competitions can be traced back the early 1900s from contests taking place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim areas. Mixed Martial Arts competitions were birthed in the United States in 1993 when Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Royce Gracie won the first Ultimate Fighting Championship tournament by subduing three challengers within a mere 5 minutes. This sparked the revolution of martial arts on this continent while Japan’s Shooto tournament was won by Rickson Gracie in 1994-1995 leading to creation of the Pride Fighting Championships in 1997. All this continued to perpetuate the popularity of the MMA’s. In 2005 the United States Army sanctioned mixed martial arts due to its effectiveness. Martial Arts is the fastest growing sport in the world today.
